COLIBRI RECOVERY SERVICES, LLC

PROFESSIONAL SERVICES

Colibri Recovery Services can help you as you seek to understand and heal from negative, confusing and abusive high-demand/high-control group experiences.  All services are rendered in a safe, supportive, confidential and nonjudgmental manner.

I offer short-term counseling and coaching for individuals and support group facilitation for people seeking support and guidance in their recovery from destructive mind control and high-demand/high-control groups.  As a coach and support group facilitator, I act as a trustworthy guide, counselor and teacher--not as a psychotherapist per se.

I help clients address and work through the issues that are most pressing for them, while providing a strong educational base of knowledge and introduction to the most effective interventions available.  Free intake screening appointments are required prior to joining therapeutic support groups.  Please call and ask the questions that are most important to you during our initial phone conversation.  Your privacy will be completely respected.

As well, I present tailored workshops designed to inform audiences about the aspects of destructive mind control and high-demand/high-control groups that they are most interested in.  Additionally, I craft and deliver professional development trainings for meeting continuing education requirements for mental health, medical, legal and education professionals.  I also tailor trainings for  legislators, members of the judiciary, law enforcement, and other select groups.

What is Destructive Mind Control?

What are High-Demand/High-Control Groups?

Most people, regardless of their educational level and professional background do not have a good, basic understanding of what destructive mind control and high-demand/high-control groups (sometimes referred to as cults or cultic groups) are.  Nor do they understand the degree to which high-demand/high-control groups can be abusive, lawless, and violators of their members' fundamental human rights.  Likewise, it is common for people to have little appreciation for just how many of these groups exist in the United States, including how many types there are, nor an understanding of the magnitude of the harm they incur at the micro, mezzo and macro levels.  Individuals, families, and societies all suffer when cults or cultic groups misuse their positions of power and authority--and violate the human rights of their membership.

High-Demand/ High-Control Groups

In his book, Thought Reform and the Psychology of Totalism, psychiatrist and cult expert Robert J. Lifton, MD, described high-demand/high-control groups as totalitarian in which the following eight psychological themes exist:

  1. milieu control - control of human communication
  2. mystical manipulation
  3. demand for purity
  4. exploitative use of confession
  5. fundamental dogma is "sacred science" and can't be questioned
  6. loaded language or thought-stopping clichés
  7. primacy of doctrine over person
  8. dispensing of existence - members who are worthy and in existence versus nonmembers who are unworthy and nonexistent

(pgs. 420-434)

Destructive Mind Control

Cult expert Margaret Singer, PhD, former professor of psychology at UC Berkeley, labeled destructive mind control  as thought reform and stated, "...[it's] is a concerted effort to change a person's way of looking at the world, which will change his or her behavior.  It is distinguished from other forms of social learning by the conditions under which it is conducted and by the techniques of environmental and interpersonal manipulation that are meant to suppress certain behaviors and to elicit and train other behaviors."

—SERVICES—

Additionally, I craft and deliver professional development trainings for meeting continuing education requirements for mental health, medical, legal, and education professionals.  I also tailor trainings for  legislators, members of the judiciary, law enforcement, and other select groups.

SUPPORT GROUPS

I lead weekly small groups with no more than 12 participants.  Some are specifically for women, others for mixed groups of women and men. Groups for individuals who were sexually abused by members within their cultic organization, and groups for those who identify as LGBTQ are also available.  New topics are presented weekly in 50-minute educational segments, followed by group discussion.  Sessions begin with a short meditation followed by a "check in" with members.  Groups end with the sharing of positive quotes and good wishes for all!  Eight-week group sessions last 2 hours weekly.

WORKSHOPS

I craft lively, engaging, informative, multimedia workshops about destructive mind control, high-demand/high-control groups (or cults), and topics that relate directly to those two main subjects as determined by the needs and interests of groups that seek my services. I draw from the highest-possible caliber of resources available when I formulate my presentations.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT TRAINING

Does your professional organization  want to learn more about cultic groups--what they are, how they function, the qualities that their founders and leaders typically exhibit, an estimate of how many such groups there are in the U.S., and an overview of just how problematic they can be and why?  I'd be happy to create a customized proposal for your organization.  My professional development trainings are well thought out, make effective use of multimedia, are professionally-delivered, yet never stuffy or boring!
